Here's a little background information about me. In other words, my 66-year voyage - the last 40-something with pen in hand.
My writing career can be traced back to the mid-70s while attending college at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. Success in English courses prompted me to try my hand at freelance writing. After graduating with a B.S. degree in Resource Management and finding employment in my field I continued to write on the side. My first published article in a regional weekly outdoor newspaper landed me $4.80 back in 1979. Subsequently, I discovered I had a talent for putting words on paper and that fact was acknowledged when my articles were accepted by the likes of national magazines Field & Stream, Fur, Fish & Game, Wing & Shot, and RGS Drummer - as well as state publications like Wisconsin Sportsman, Badger Sportsman, and Woods and Waters.
Writing was and still is my passion and a day does not go by without it being on my agenda. In the 80s I began writing a monthly magazine gun dog column, “Kennel Talk”, which I continued to write for more than twenty years until recently, when the same magazine, Badger Sportsman fell on hard times. In the 90s I created a weekly newspaper outdoor column, “Up the Creek”, which ran for years in several central Wisconsin weekly newspapers - the Plover Profile, Manawa Advocate, and the Tomorrow River Times. In 2006, the column was picked up by Gannett Wisconsin Newspapers in the Wausau, Stevens Point, Marshfield, and Wisconsin Rapids markets. In December 2010, I was asked by the editor of the Portage County Gazette to write my column for their weekly newspaper.
Ken M. Blomberg is a freelance writer and longtime resident of the Town of Eau Pleine, northeast of Junction City. He is a 1976 graduate of UWSP in Resource Management and past Executive Director of the Wisconsin Rural Water Association. Ken is now retired, owns a dog kennel in the country, and writes full-time.
Wisconsin Bird Hunting Tales, my second book, was published by The History Press in 2018.
In April of 2017, Up the Creek (the book) was published by Orange Hat Publishing. It contains 48 of my favorite essays, presented by the seasons of the year. It is a product of decades of my weekly outdoor-related newspaper and magazine articles. I hope you enjoy reading my book as much as I enjoyed writing it.
In 2019, Letters from Art was published by Orange Hat Publishing.
